In Spain, I heard people have up to five meals daily. There’s the breakfast before going out, a light snack in the late morning, a late lunch after 2 p.m., stopping by a bar for drinks and food on the way back in the evening, and finally, a light supper late at night. For the late morning snack, it’s common to have churros dipped in hot chocolate, and I saw churros and hot chocolate served in various places.
Dipping freshly fried crispy churros into hot chocolate looks delicious. However, I could only watch my family enjoy it since it’s made primarily with wheat flour. But since I wanted to try it, I looked for gluten-free churros. And guess what? I found a shop that specializes in churros and also makes gluten-free ones! I was thrilled! 💕
The shop is called Churrería Chocolatería 1902, located in Madrid.
In this shop, the gluten-free churros are fried in a separate pot of oil, which is reassuring. Since the wheat flour and gluten-free churros look the same, they are served on black plates to easily distinguish them. Again, it’s clear and reassuring.
When I was excited when I got my plate since they looked so wonderful. And, they were so crispy! It’s been a while since I had such crispy fried food. So satisfying!
I had my daughter try both the wheat flour churros and the gluten-free ones, and she said there was no noticeable difference. That made me happy. The hot chocolate had a mild sweetness. The churros had a subtle hint of saltiness, so they didn’t become overly sweet even when dipped in the hot chocolate. We happily finished them all.
Although they’re called churros, they offer larger versions and various shapes of churros. Each had a different name. Just like how there are different shapes and textures of rice crackers made from the same rice, I’m sure there are variations in texture and everyone has their own preferences 🤔.
While having them for a late morning snack is common, this churro specialty shop is open all day. They were also available throughout the day in other cafes. Give them a try!
